TRS vs TS Guitar Cables: What Is the Difference and Which Do You Need?

The Physical Difference

TS and TRS connectors share the same 6.35mm (1/4-inch) diameter used in virtually all guitar equipment. The difference comes down to how many electrical contacts each plug makes. As documented by Wikipedia's entry on phone connectors, a TS connector has two contacts: the tip carries the audio signal, and the sleeve serves as ground. A TRS connector adds a third contact, the ring, between the tip and sleeve, which opens up a second electrical path.

What TS Cables Are For

TS cables carry unbalanced mono audio, and that's the standard for electric guitars, bass guitars, and the connections between most effects pedals. The signal travels through the tip conductor while the sleeve handles the ground reference. Because there's no second signal path, TS cables pick up electromagnetic interference more easily over long runs.

According to Premier Guitar's guide on balanced and unbalanced cables (authored by Bryan Clark, April 2023), unbalanced cables transmit cleanly up to approximately 20 feet. Past that distance, high-frequency loss increases and the cable picks up more interference from electromagnetic fields and radio frequency sources. For standard pedalboard patching, where cables run 6 to 18 inches, this never becomes a practical concern in our experience. What TRS Cables Are For

TRS cables serve three distinct purposes, and mixing them up is a common source of signal problems. First, they carry balanced mono audio: both the tip and ring carry the same signal, with one phase inverted. At the destination, the receiving device flips one phase back and combines the two, and that process cancels out any noise the cable picked up along the way. Premier Guitar notes that balanced cables can transmit cleanly over 'several hundred feet' without introducing noise or hum. Second, TRS connectors carry stereo audio, where the tip handles the left channel and the ring handles the right channel; most headphone cables use this configuration. Third, engineers use TRS connectors for insert connections on mixers and audio interfaces, where the tip carries the send signal and the ring carries the return.

Simply put, if you're connecting a guitar to a pedal, a pedal to another pedal, or a pedal to an amp, you want a TS cable. If you're running a long cable from a DI box to a mixing board, a balanced TRS or XLR cable dramatically cuts down noise pickup.

Why Plugging the Wrong Cable In Causes Problems

The most common mistake we see is connecting a balanced TRS output to an unbalanced TS input, or the reverse. Connect a balanced stereo output to a balanced mono input and the phase-inverted signal cancels out center-image content; vocals, kick drum, snare, bass. Premier Guitar explains that the balanced input treats the shared center-image signal as noise and strips it out, which leaves the signal sounding thin or absent. For guitarists, the practical version of this problem is simpler. If your signal sounds thin, weak, or completely absent, check that you're using the correct cable type for each connection. A TS-to-TRS mismatch rarely wipes out signal entirely in guitar rigs, but it can drop your level or introduce noise depending on the circuit design.

When Do Guitarists Actually Need TRS?

Most guitarists rarely need TRS cables anywhere in their signal chain. The exceptions we run into include using a stereo effects pedal (chorus, reverb, delay) with separate left and right outputs, connecting to audio interfaces through balanced TRS inputs, running an effects loop on an amplifier that uses an insert-style connection, and connecting certain MIDI controllers that use TRS for MIDI signal transmission.

If you're building a standard guitar-to-pedalboard-to-amp rig, TS cables are the right call for every connection. The TRS question only becomes relevant once you start routing signal into a mixing board or recording interface, or once you start running stereo effects in a wet/dry rig.

Identifying Which You Have

The simplest way to tell a TS cable from a TRS cable is to look at the plug. A TS connector has one black ring (the insulating band between tip and sleeve). A TRS connector has two black rings. Count the rings: one ring means TS, two rings means TRS. This holds true for both 1/4-inch and 3.5mm connector sizes.

For guitar pedalboard use, we always recommend TS patch cables. For headphone connections and studio equipment, TRS is standard. If you're buying cables without knowing which one you need, check the output spec on the source device and the input spec on the destination device before you order.
