High-capacitance cables act as a low-pass filter on your signal, gradually rolling off treble frequencies as cable length increases. If you want a bright, clear, high-definition guitar tone, we recommend lower capacitance per foot, especially for longer cable runs.

The exact capacitance value at which high-frequency roll-off becomes audible depends on your pickups, your amplifier's input impedance, and cable length. High-output humbuckers are somewhat less sensitive to capacitance effects than single-coil pickups at low volume. In our experience, for short cable runs under ten feet, capacitance differences between quality cables rarely reach an audible threshold. For longer runs, lower capacitance per foot becomes more meaningful.

Cable Length and Signal Integrity

Length is the easiest cable decision to get wrong, and we see players get it wrong often. According to a 2023 article in Premier Guitar by Bryan Clark, unbalanced instrument cables, which is what all standard guitar cables are, transmit signal cleanly up to approximately 20 feet. Beyond that distance, noise accumulates and signal quality degrades. For most stage setups and home studios, we'd call staying under 20 feet practical advice.

For players who need more distance, larger stages, separation from amplifiers, or complex routing setups, the answer is not a longer unbalanced cable. We'd point you toward a dedicated DI box or buffer pedal instead, since that converts the signal to a format better suited to longer runs. Buying a 30-foot instrument cable and expecting the performance of a 15-foot one is an expectation the physics simply does not support.
